After spending 3 weeks in Lombok, we set sail to the ever popular island of Bali. We traveled together with SV Cintana (Sean) as he was having challenges with crew and his boat. He preferred to day hop the 105 mile trip so break the passage up into 2 nights. Our passage took us across the Lombok strait (between Lombok and Bali islands) which can experience incredible currents (up to 5-6 knots of current) as it is the main flow between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean called the Indonesian Throughflow. We were lucky that the tides were in our favor during daylight hours and in fact had an amazing day sailing crossing the Lombok Strait. The winds around these islands with large volcanic mountains make the wind tricky…. Mt. Agung (9,944 ft) dominates the surrounding area, influencing the climate, especially rainfall patterns. This meant for us the wind would come from behind us, in front of us, or no wind at all.
SV Cintana in the Lombok Strait..it was perfect sailing Leaving Lombok and watching the local fishermen on shore
The highlight of this passage goes to our new friend Rahman. We met Rahman in Lombok who was there helping his friend rebuild his house and village after the N. Lombok earthquake on August 5th, 2018. Rahman stopped by our school site, as many did, and I invited him to work with us, as I did with everyone who stopped by. Most people I spoke to smiled and generally walked away but Rahman stayed and helped and said he would come the next day. He came back everyday after that until we were done. He didn’t speak much english but we used Google Translate and that was the way we were able to exchange stories and really connect. We invited him to sail with us to Bali…he was so excited…. and off we go…first stop to Gili Aire.
Breakfast on Slow Flight with Sean and Rahman PIZZA!!!! Saw this sign…interesting…. Shores of Gili Aire. I imagine before the earthquake these beaches would of been lined with tourists. Walking the streets of Gili Aire…the people there were not as friendly as other places in Indonesia….maybe too many tourists?
Our last night we anchored at Amed bay on the north side of Bali. Plenty of fishing platforms to dodge. This half moon bay allowed the swell to roll in and we all rocked pretty good but we can handle just about anything for 1 night!
Dinner on Slow Flight with SV Revision II (Terry and Mike) and SV Cintana (Sean) Mt. Agung at sunset…stunning!
Rahman got a phone call during our passage and we learned about the devastating earthquake and tsunami on the west side of Sulawesi (Rahman’s home island) in the town of Palu. Rahman made many calls and showed us video of the devastation. Despite the horrific news, we did try to enjoy ourselves.
Rahman helping out with dinner Rahman looks pretty comfortable
Every day and night Rahman would drop the line Caught this little fellow While underway, our lines were out. Unfortunately plastic was all we caught
Don’t worry we put Rahman to work…… I think he was surprised how hard it was : )

We arrived at Lovina, Bali on October 2nd. Most of our rally friends had moved on to further rally points but we managed to arrive with a few familiar faces in the anchorage. Mostly we wanted to catch up with our friends, do a little boat work, and provision before we headed off to the more remote places in western Indonesia. We said goodbye to Rahman as he headed to Palu to see where he could help after the Tsunami but trust me…we kept in touch…he called almost everyday!
Cute town…. Live music! I actually got Trevor to dance with me…
I am too lazy…we paid to get our stainless steel polished Fuel filters….Indonesian fuel is…let’s just say…a bit dirty
The Kids Table was reunited (Thai style) …FINALLY!!!!!
Trevor and Amy (SV Starry Horizons) share…or close enough..a birthday so we celebrated together a day early as we were set to leave before the actual big day. Think he is enjoying his ice cream?
OMG…this place is awesome! We bought so much these guys helped bring our provisions to our dinghy on the beach..in a cart : ) Sorry for those who followed us…we bought all the cheese!!!! (Seriously we did)
I wanted to rent scooters and visit the town of Ubud…..a place I visited almost 20 years ago with my dear friend Hannah Anderson. Ubud is not what I remembered and likely not a place I would visit again but we enjoyed the ride through the island…that was an adventure inself!
Monkeys on the side of the road, hanging off power lines, sitting in trees, MAGICAL! Refueling was easy…the little stores along side the road sold gas in bottles, just stop and you get full service! You may not understand the significance of this photo….but Trevor is passing a vehicle…. really fast! Ahhhh…rice fields……
The 50,000 Rupiah The real life version….. Thankfully I can prepared. with a sarong to wear in the Hindu temple.
In Ubud, we choose Mexican Food?!!!!! A small reminder of Seattle….. Yeah….so many tourists! Bali is mostly Hindu, while the rest of Indonesia is mostly Muslim….there are many theories as to why Bali remains to be Hindu and not convert to Muslin….it’s above my pay grade.
We took a wrong turn heading back to Lovina and took back roads through little villages…. However cool it was, the roads were steep, very steep…and so curvy you could not see oncoming traffic and hoped no large vehicles were coming….. And….we “lost” our back brakes! We were told a tourist died because she used her brakes all the way down the mountain and when she was turning a corner, the brakes failed and she just fell off the cliff.

And so it’s time to move on…. Next up…Bawean Island in the Java Sea…..
Kimi and Trevor,

Thanks for the stories, I love them all. I just know I will meet you both again someday.
