Cigar Island- aka Serutu island

Being behind the rally we really wanted to catch up to see people before everyone parted ways. Instead of following the rally routes towards the south, we decided to take longer overnight passages with less stops and head north.  This was a bit favorable due to the ease of being in the main shipping channel vs. close to shore with greater probability of fishing activities, though there were still plenty of fishing vessels…of course..what were we thinking.  Our first stop from Kumai, Borneo was a 230 mile passage to Serutu Island, a national marine park and uninhabited island.  It was the best passage decision made yet…Kenobi and Cintana… following behind us.

To exit the river and pass through the bay was an almost all day-light hour passage, even with the favorable outgoing tide.  So Trevor picked a spot in the middle of nowhere (mind you we are traveling on a shelf and the depth was shallow) just before dusk.  Dropped anchor with no protection and boy were we rolling but that’s ok… we weighed anchor early the next morning at 5 am for our next leg towards Serutu Island.

Mostly motoring and we did find wind about 4 am the next morning, beam reach with 15-20 knots, we had a favorable tide at this point and our speed over ground reached 7-8 knots!  The tides and currents in this area are a bit strange as it travels around Borneo and the surrounding islands so it was difficult to predict which direction the current ran…alas, we arrived at Serutu Island in perfect timing (noon) to see surrounding reefs to drop anchor….it was beautiful!

We saw 4 fishing boats anchored in the bay….Trevor thought: “Why not see if they have any fish for dinner?”….and so it was….. Trevor took some new knives, snacks, and Steve donated some fishing lines/lures and sure enough…we had dinner.

It only made sense to have a BBB on the beach that night…..

The next day the girls kayaked while the boys worked on boat stuff….Trevor has been working on SV Cintana to help Sean with electrical issues (batteries, gauges, engine solenoid, roller furler)…. I hate to say it but I think Trevor worked more on Cintana than Slow Flight in the last month : )

The next morning we did yoga on the beach before we left the anchorage…. Mar Cea is a yoga instructor so we got our breath right and most of the poses (LOL)!

And we are off…again…it’s been a fast and crazy fun time….now to cross the equator AGAIN!…up next…
