Well, I am sure we saw a few crazy rich asians but we were so enamoured by the big city life we didn’t care too much about filial piety. SV Kenobi (Donna and Steve) had already been to Singapore but graced us with their presence for another trip there…. we had a blast!
When we arrived in Singapore, the usual passenger check in occured: Immigration and customs. As many of you know, Singapore laws can be viewed as very strict, such as fines for littering, spitting, jaywalking, and gum chewing just to name a few. But in reality… there was little fear of being “arrested” and we saw very little evidence of being watched or the like.
The city was beautiful and such a change to the environment in Indonesia, though we loved the remote villages of Indonesia, I must be honest, it was nice to be surrounded with modern amenities, sleek buildings, and technology everywhere.
The MRT is the way we got around…cheap and efficient and took us everywhere we needed to go but we still took a city tour on a double decker bus which we could jump on/off at specific stops. It was a great way to see the city in such a short amount of time we had.
Lots of different people….it was refreshing : )
Donna made me the official “tour guide” so I put together a rough list of Singapore “bucket list” items….some we could do and some we just didn’t have the time or money….First on the list was FOOD!!! Let’s just say we had first breakfast, second breakfast, first lunch, second lunch, happy hour, first dinner…and second dinner…. Goal: to gain 10 pounds!
Hawker stalls in Singapore are famous for being…well…Michele rated?! I have never been to a Michele rated establishment so why not start with cheap street food!
Our trip would coincide with Diwali or Deepavali (November 6th, 2018), a Hindu festival of lights. I thought, and thought wrong, that having dinner in Little India would expose a fabulous night festivities…unfortunately the night activities are celebrated the evening BEFORE and we found Little India almost empty!!!! We found a great Indian restaurant anyways…the Banana Leaf. Below is a link to wikipedia about the Diwali festival.
Bellies full…all the time…we can see the iconic Singapore landmarks… first up was the Buddhist temple…
We visited the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, Sri Mariamman, the day before Diwali and this place was full of activity…it was strange to be a “tourist” while so many were paying respects and carrying out their traditional ceremonies. I am sure we weren’t the first ones but note to self: “self….do more research” before!
Since we are NOT “crazy rich asians”…..we didn’t shop on Orchard Street which has just about every brand name you can think of and more!
Nest stop….the Gardens by the Bay with life sized “electronic” trees. The exhibits were informative with examples of lots of different ecosystems. Thanks to Donna on SV Kenobi for the photos…my phone and camera batteries were dead!
The iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel…. we just walked around the massive mall near the hotel. It would of cost about $75 usd to travel to the top and enjoy the luxurious amenities but opted to spend our money on other things (FOOD)!
Of course we had to have a proper Singapore sling at the Long Bar in the famous Raffles Hotel….
Our last day we were looking for a free activity before we caught the ferry back to Indonesia. I found “10 gates of Hell”… sounded appropriate! Let’s just say it was more like an erie and dark amusement park…but with lots of kids playing around : )
Here is a great link to a New York Times article about what to do in Singapore in a short period of time…
It was a great and fun 3 day trip to Singapore and it did not disappoint! But now it is time to cross the Singapore Strait and enter Malaysia!!!!
