Well, I am sure we saw a few crazy rich asians but we were so enamoured by the big city life we didn’t care too much about filial piety. SV Kenobi (Donna and Steve) had already been to Singapore but graced us with their presence for another trip there…. we had a blast!
Tickets were about $45 usd each, round trip from Batam Island near Nongsa Point Marina. The ride was about 45 minutes…at about 30 knots speed over ground! Cargo ship parking lot!
When we arrived in Singapore, the usual passenger check in occured: Immigration and customs. As many of you know, Singapore laws can be viewed as very strict, such as fines for littering, spitting, jaywalking, and gum chewing just to name a few. But in reality… there was little fear of being “arrested” and we saw very little evidence of being watched or the like.
We had to pay “taxes” on the cigarettes I brought into to Singapore….We were told that I had to carry this around in case I was asked if I had paid the tax. The customs guy told us there are “undercover smoking police” so I should be careful?….never felt weird or saw any lurking officials.
The city was beautiful and such a change to the environment in Indonesia, though we loved the remote villages of Indonesia, I must be honest, it was nice to be surrounded with modern amenities, sleek buildings, and technology everywhere.
Buildings of all shapes: Round, square, rectangular….. AND….spaceship shape?! Even “living” buildings?
Every large bank from all over the world seem to have a presence here….
Our Airbnb…9th floor with pool access Street view near our Airbnb Looks like you can get a card to allow for longer street crossings…how cool is that?!
But somethings stay constant …laundry : )
The MRT is the way we got around…cheap and efficient and took us everywhere we needed to go but we still took a city tour on a double decker bus which we could jump on/off at specific stops. It was a great way to see the city in such a short amount of time we had.
Not your typical street performer we are use to seeing outside the MRT…. I am amongst my people!
Double decker bus tour…this was a cool way to get an overall view of the city.
Lots of different people….it was refreshing : )
One for Canada…. ummmm……? Too cool for school!
Donna made me the official “tour guide” so I put together a rough list of Singapore “bucket list” items….some we could do and some we just didn’t have the time or money….First on the list was FOOD!!! Let’s just say we had first breakfast, second breakfast, first lunch, second lunch, happy hour, first dinner…and second dinner…. Goal: to gain 10 pounds!
First lunch near our AirBnB…. Love all the food and it was so accessible….
We found this gem 4 blocks away from where we stayed. It had a nautical theme, of course. We had so much food it was BEAUTIFUL! From the photo to the left, here is the place packed at 11pm!!! All locals, we chose the right place : )
Hawker stalls in Singapore are famous for being…well…Michele rated?! I have never been to a Michele rated establishment so why not start with cheap street food!
I can literally smell all the scrumptious food being cooked…my tummy just growled!
At Hawker Chan’s ready to order Shoyu Chicken….about $3 usd…tasted marvelous!
This is Bak Kwa…a Singapore and Malaysian Street-Style roasted meat snack. I had just read an article about it during my research for “what to do in Singapore” and we recognized it in China Town. It is grilled or roasted over charcoal which is faster than traditional dehydrated meats and makes for a juicier and softer texture. It was so good…seriously better than beef jerky.
Our trip would coincide with Diwali or Deepavali (November 6th, 2018), a Hindu festival of lights. I thought, and thought wrong, that having dinner in Little India would expose a fabulous night festivities…unfortunately the night activities are celebrated the evening BEFORE and we found Little India almost empty!!!! We found a great Indian restaurant anyways…the Banana Leaf. Below is a link to wikipedia about the Diwali festival.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali
We tried to go to Little India for Depawali…sadly there were only a “few” people out…. Banana Leaf restaurant…amazing flavors..just what we wanted… The gang at Banana Leaf…. trust me there was more food coming : )
Bellies full…all the time…we can see the iconic Singapore landmarks… first up was the Buddhist temple…
Entrance…I forgot my sorang so we had to “borrow” one at the door to cover our shoulders…. Massive buddha Lots of little Buddhas… close up of the little buddhas…so detailed! Ahhh…I could watch these guys all day long…playing Chinese chess just outside the temple
We visited the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, Sri Mariamman, the day before Diwali and this place was full of activity…it was strange to be a “tourist” while so many were paying respects and carrying out their traditional ceremonies. I am sure we weren’t the first ones but note to self: “self….do more research” before!
The front door…. there are little gold bells on the massive door that people would touch on the way out..I did it just because : )
Everyone was really dressed up Wall of water spouts… Not a new version of yoga’s childs pose….
“I have been dotted”
Since we are NOT “crazy rich asians”…..we didn’t shop on Orchard Street which has just about every brand name you can think of and more!
We blew our budget just walking down the street here….
Diamonds anyone? Just a sample of the inventory here on Orchard street!
Nest stop….the Gardens by the Bay with life sized “electronic” trees. The exhibits were informative with examples of lots of different ecosystems. Thanks to Donna on SV Kenobi for the photos…my phone and camera batteries were dead!
Inside the exhibits…. Live trees…. Outside….electric trees…and a Trevor…
Stunning views of the city…we didn’t go at night to see the light show here but we heard amazing things about ir from other cruisers who went….oh well..next time?
The iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel…. we just walked around the massive mall near the hotel. It would of cost about $75 usd to travel to the top and enjoy the luxurious amenities but opted to spend our money on other things (FOOD)!
By day… by night!
Of course we had to have a proper Singapore sling at the Long Bar in the famous Raffles Hotel….
Trevor looks like he needs a drink!
Check….off the list…. at $26 usd for each drink…let’s just say we only had 1!
Our last day we were looking for a free activity before we caught the ferry back to Indonesia. I found “10 gates of Hell”… sounded appropriate! Let’s just say it was more like an erie and dark amusement park…but with lots of kids playing around : )
The Haw Paw Villa….free entrance….random structures and bizarre imagery. The history is, this park was built around 1937 by Aw Boon Haw, who developed Tiger Balm. He had thousands of statues depicting traditional confucianism teachings, folklore, mythology, and legends.
Need I saw more?! Being pounded by stone mallet is punishment for the crime of being a “tax dodger”…. wonder what would have happen to the tax account who did their taxes?! Not pretty….
Here is a great link to a New York Times article about what to do in Singapore in a short period of time…
It was a great and fun 3 day trip to Singapore and it did not disappoint! But now it is time to cross the Singapore Strait and enter Malaysia!!!!
