From Pulau Pangkor to Langkawi is about a 131 miles. We split it up into 2 day sails and decided to anchor out at Pulau Kendi. We left Pulau Pangkor early in the morning to make it the 67 mile passage to anchor during daylight hours. We ended up traveling with SV Erie Spirit…it was cool to get a radio call underway. The following morning leaving again at the crack of dawn to make it another 64 miles to our next anchorage at the island of Langkawi…but that was rudely interrupted….
We decided to NOT anchor at the suggested Tanjung Gertak Sanggul as it was too shallow for our comfort We had a nice welcome squall right when we anchored….as usual! 25+ knots of wind from the East, giving us a lee shore. Never ending…Dodge boat…fishing vessels everywhere! Panoramic photo gone wrong…This is us entering Langkawi island. A preview for what Thailand will look like with towers of limestone. We actually had a great sail and made record time and arrived early?! Currents helped of course!
Our original plan was to anchor at South Pulau Dayang Bunting where you could take a short walk up to Princess lake: there is a legend that this lake promotes fertility…not something we are worried about (LOL). But….as Trevor was letting our anchor chain out…he got a fish hook stuck in his finger… As you can image I freaked the “F” out… Trevor actually had to lay down as he thought he was going into shock. After many tries and multiple tool used to get the hook out we decided to haul BUTT to a marina…..these photos don’t need a lot of explanation : )

So off to Royal Langkawi Yacht Club it was…another 10 miles….hoping we would get there before the marina office closed and could assign us a berth. We had reservations for the next day but pleaded with them that we had a minor medical emergency and if they could ‘squeeze’ us in, it would be greatly appreciated. They helped us with lines as Trevor had to steer with 1 hand. We didn’t know it then but this was going to be home for the next month 1/2?!
Front of the RLYC We were back on E Dock…just like in Seattle.. (E-Hood) Since there were not a lot of other fleet members around…it was just us…but we weren’t alone….found this guy on our deck one morning RLYC resident water lizard!!! Ever see a jellyfish with black tentacles? So just outside the marina, these monkeys would come out just after lunch time to go through the garbage..smart…and fat guys : )
Langkawi is a duty free island…good for us, no taxes paid…however, a visiting yacht need to check in with the Harbormaster, Customs, and Immigration.

After we were all checked in, stitched up, and full of antibiotics…it was time to attend the last few Rally organized events. First was a half day trip tour around the island.
Geo Park…mangroves everywhere…the mangroves saved most of Langkawi from the Tsunami in 2004 We were served a traditional Malay breakfast called Nasi Lemak Inside was rice, boiled egg, spicy sauce, and sardines…. re-planted mangroves… Helping…… Mangrove scarecrow…..love it!!!!
Next up was a visit to Oriental VIllage where you could take a short hike to waterfalls, ride a gondola from peak to peak, or do some shopping…..
Gondola shown here….we decided not to do any of that and come back another day (sadly we didn’t come back this way) as I think we only had about an hour and 1/2…felt a bit rushed…We heard the views up there are stunning though!
We just walked around the little shops …. and was able to get some “errands” accomplished
We wanted to acknowledge Pangkor Marina for their wonderful service and we found this ship…. We also found a guy who could engrave a small “plaque” for the ship…. Sazli, organizer of the Sail malaysia rally gave me some great suggestions, some I shouldn’t post publicly. I choose this one to keep it clean ; ) It’s a long story: SV Kenobi (Donna and Steve) and SV Cintanta (Sean and Mar-Cea) and us traveled together for almost 1/2 of Indonesia rally and all of the Malaysia rally. As you can imagine, little jokes and funny nicknames began to take shape. We always talked about getting t-shirts made…and we did! The original drawings…. I think the only one that needs an explanation is Donna’s: “Can Sleep”…but she always drank Jim Beam and Diet Coke
I honestly don’t know why this was so funny to me at the time, Trevor didn’t think it was funny…but as you know, the metric system is used everywhere BUT the US (and somewhere else I can’t remember). But this was the first time we had been to a Subway. I literally laughed out loud thinking about what they would call the “Footlong Sub” if Subway wanted to convert to metric…..I guess “1/3 meter sub ” just doesn’t roll off the tongue….
Our last official “dinner” at the Rice Patty Museum. Treated to fantastic food, once again, and cultural dances.
Entering there were drums and beautifully dressed personnel The rice pattys….not sure if they are operational…this one doesn’t look too healthy…. The restaurant at the Rice patty museum
Our last rally event was a happy hour and reception at Rebak Island, a short 5 minute ferry ride to this private island..with a marina.
Most of our fellow rally fleet took their boats here, hence why there was no room for Slow Flight and why we had reservations at RLYC. Rebak is not attached to the main island of Langkawi so you need to ferry (free) over to do major shopping..unfortunately the last ferry back to Rebak is like at 7:30 pm… to early for a good dinner out. But they do know how to put on a party and their amenities are to die for…so we hear….pool, great bar and restaurant. Sad we couldn’t spend our last weeks with our fellow fleet but it is what it is…RLYC it was!

So that’s a wrap of the Sail malaysia Rally 2018. It was a huge month full of friends and memories to last a lifetime. It was sad to say goodbye…it seemed as this was the place lots of people decided to depart or stay for the next cruising season. For us it was up to Thailand and cross the Indian Ocean… Hopefully our paths will cross once again!
Thank you to Sazli, James and team at Pangkor marina, Sarah and team at Port Dickson marina, Patrick and Elizabeth (SV LeBarque), Luc and Jackie (SV Sloepmouche) for all your hard work getting our fleet organized and put together.
We all appreciate you greatly!
Again, thank you Luc and Jackie for putting together these memorable videos of our rally this year. Enjoy : )
Up next…Langkawi….by ourselves….almost….
