Well, it’s Sunday again…and why not make it another “Sunday Fun-day”! This time we are in the company of SV Star Charger IV: Captain Alasdiar and wife Gill, with crew Chris and Livia who joined us on a half day 4×4 tour of Sandwich Harbour in the Namib Desert. Beware, there will be lots of videos in this one…photos themselves just don’t give the experience justice.
The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world and contains some of the world’s driest regions. However, far offshore the collision of the cold Benguela Current and warm air from the Hadley Cell (an atmospheric circulation near the equator) create a fog belt that frequently envelops parts of the desert. Coastal regions can experience more than 180 days of thick fog a year. While this has proved a major hazard to ships—more than a thousand wrecks litter the Skeleton Coast just north of Walvis Bay – it is a vital source of moisture for desert life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namib
But first, Trevor and I took a short walk in the morning to see the local flamingos here in Walvis Bay. one of the “best” flamingo viewings world wide here and bird watchers come here to see them. These Lesser and Greater flamingos migrate here to feed before they breed in Etosha. We have heard there are about 300,000 of flamingos here now….too many to count….
Not only did we see flamingos but a beautiful large pelican doing it’s pelican thang….
